by the way, in the you tube video of “Ranjish..” Mehandi looks very old. the casette I have has his photo of younger age.
And from the voice/performance, also, the one from casette is far superior!

I’m not a Gazal enthuziast, but I have one audio casette of Gazals. Guess who? Mehandi Hasan!
I’d listened to “Ranjish…” numerous times.

One instance to share about the casette:
Once we’d been to Alibaug or somewhere and on the way back, it was almost mid night, we coming from Tamhini route. Everybody was tired and opted to close eyes and mouth.
That time I chose to play this casette. It has gems you won’t be able to rate, between them. One is this ‘Ranjish…”
There was one more, unfortunately I don’t remember it at this moment. One younger friend in our group, was listening the gazals carefully (like all others). He said, ‘My god! what a gem of words! who has written this? Is this a new one?’
I answered ‘ Yes, you say newer, but ti’s written 150 years ago’
‘Who is the poet’
‘Bahadurshah Zafar’
‘This name sounds like name of Emperor’
‘yes he was Emperor! the last Mughal!!’
